GloPoWriMo 2018 - day twenty-three

Today the prompt is to write a poem based on heard material.

it is an inherent part of being human that we listen
and that when we listen we interpret
what we hear according to our own understanding

so when we hear the call of whales
or the song of the soaring curlew
        we attribute to it meaning

but what if there is no meaning and if the sounds we hear
are nothing more than simply sounds
and the sounds themselves are mocking us

although surely the mockery would be wrong as that
   would in turn attribute meaning
to the meaningless beauty of sounds
